Oklahoma Pig Farmers give back
Giving back is a cornerstone of what Oklahoma pig farmers do. Below is a glimpse into the ways pig farmers give back to their communities with food, time, donations, and more throughout the year.
Give-A-Ham Challenge
Each holiday season, from Giving Tuesday until Christmas, pig farmers come together to participate in the Give-A-Ham challenge. This challenge encourages the donation of hams or other pork products to local organizations, food pantries or families in need. Read more about the Give-A-Ham challenge here.
Regional Food Bank of Oklahoma
Each December, Oklahoma pig farmers donate to the Regional Food Bank of Oklahoma. In 2021, a donation of $12,300 was made to equal a lifetime monetary donation of $175,000.
Pre-Memorial Day Blood Drive
For the past 15 years, the Oklahoma Pork Council and the Oklahoma Blood Institute have teamed up for the annual
Pre-Memorial Day Blood Drive.
Dedication to community involvement is a large part of who Oklahoma pig farmers are. The Pre-Memorial Blood Drive is just one of the ways our farmers and staff gives back to the community. Join us for the 2023 Pre-Memorial Day Blood Drive May 25-26.
OU Children’s Hospital
Oklahoma Pork participates in many cooked product donation events throughout the year. At an event at Okie Tonk Café last year, generous pork lovers donated more than $600 dollars to the tip jar. Oklahoma Pork staff contributed by bringing donations to $1,000. The Board of Directors matched those funds to $2,000 to donate to the OU Children’s Hospital. Oklahoma Pork purchased pig Wubbanub pacifiers to go to babies in the NICU. The donations and matching funds allowed Oklahoma Pork to purchase 256 Wubbanubs.
Parker Robinson Donation Event
When one of our own is in need, the Oklahoma pork industry comes together! In July 2021, the five-year-old daughter of a local pig farmer went to St. Paul, MN, to undergo surgery for her cerebral palsy.
To help offset the cost of their medical expenses, we went to the community and served pork carnitas in exchange for donations. The event brought in more than $8,000 for the family!
