Meet the Campers | Youth Leadership Camp 2018

The 2018 Youth Leadership Campers have been selected and are gearing up for their “farm-to-fork” look at Oklahoma’s Pork Industry. They will spend the week of June 17 – 22 exploring all aspects of the pork industry. The selection committee was very impressed with this year’s applicants and is excited to meet the 12 campers.

Ally has a desire to learn and educate others about agriculture. Ally has been involved and exhibited livestock in 4-H and FFA since she was 8 years old. Ally found her interest in swine when she was able to assist her local 4-H educator with breeding, birthing and treating their pigs. Ally has also has found an interest in researching feeds, changing compliance laws and issues facing the pork industry. Ally is looking forward to meeting new people and learning more about the pork industry at YLC.

Dalton is the definition of an all around leader. Having spent his time at events such as Made for Excellence, AFR Leadership Summit, FFA Alumni Camp and at his chapter’s officer leadership training – he is well versed in what it means to be a leader. He has demonstrated the value of hard work and discipline by spending countless “barn hours” working with his show pigs. He is most excited to tour the commercial nurseries, finishing facilities and to see the harvesting process.

Madison has raised and exhibited swine since she was in the fourth grade. Not only has Madison served as the Vice President of the Marlow FFA Chapter and proven herself as a valuable asset, but she has attended numerous leadership events such as the WLC, FFA Alumni Camp, Advanced Leadership Development Conference and the State and National FFA Conventions. Madison annually donates one of her pigs to Pork for Packs at OYE for the Regional Food Bank for Oklahoma which is what drew her to YLC.

Cash has been showing pigs since 2011, but has been involved in 4-H and FFA for the last nine years. While in FFA he has received numerous degrees, been a member of the livestock judging team and attended multiple leadership events. Throughout Cash’s years showing pigs, he has developed an interest in swine nutrition and animal welfare. He is excited to attend YLC so he can acquire a better understanding of the commercial side of the swine industry.

He developed his passion for pigs at a young age and now he exhibits his projects at shows across the state and country. He serves as the Minco FFA Chapter Treasurer, volunteers his time at service projects, and is extremely involved in his church youth group. Curren is passionate about learning and teaching others about the hog industry. She has shown pigs since she was 8 years old and she is a member of the Cleveland County Livestock Team. This past year Bailey helped the Moore Livestock Judging Team bring home the fifth place title at the Tulsa State Fair. Curren enjoys volunteering her time with at Oakridge Elementary and at the Special Olympics’ livestock show. She aspires to reach her dream of becoming an agriculture education teacher.

There is no question Whitney has a strong passion for the swine industry. Whitney began showing pigs when she was just 2 years old, since then she has grown into a decorated showman, and now is the owner of a small sow herd. She serves as the Lomega FFA Chapter Secretary, is a multiple time state FFA proficiency finalist, a skillathon winner, and she’s manages these all while maintaining a 4.0 GPA. Her goal is to attend Oklahoma State University and become a large animal veterinarian.

He believes as a FFA member it is his duty to to be an advocate for the things he is most passionate about which is agriculture. Hunter has spent numerous hours working at Will Rogers Animal Hospital where he is applauded for skills in handling animals while still treating them with compassion and respect. Kailey has taken on the role as an ambassador for agriculture. She has served as the Miss Porter Peach Queen and the Porter FFA Chapter President. In addition to being involved in agriculture she is the president of the Porter High School National Honor Society, student council, her junior class and the captain of the varsity cheer team. Although McKenzie just completed her first year showing pigs, there is no question she knows what she is doing. With agriculture education being brand new to Kiefer High School, McKenzie took FFA as an opportunity to go outside of her comfort zone and try something new. As a new member she participated in the prepared speech CDE, and now she is in the process of applying to be a chapter officer. McKenzie is excited to attend YLC to learn more about the swine industry and take more knowledge back to her new FFA chapter.

Shilo is a highly accomplished young woman who has established a small sow herd while showing pigs in FFA. In addition to showing pigs, she is a member of National Honor Society, 4-H, the Fellowship of Christian Athletes, Science Club, and the basketball team. She recently was recognized as an Oklahoma Youth Expo Academic All-State recipient as well. Shilo plans to attend Southeastern and then Oklahoma State University with the hopes of pursuing a degree in agribusiness with a pre med option.
